Apple released the new iTunes 7.1 and QuickTime 7.1.5 which are supposed to work with Vista (and offer more features for the video iPod). I installed both and it recognized my imported library without trouble. iPod sync worked fine and all is well.
I also took advantage of a good deal on a large 500 GB Maxtor internal Ultra IDE hard drive from Staples for $139. I reformatted it with 64KB blocks (instead of the default 4 KB) since this drive will be dedicated to TV shows that run around 4 GB each. I forgot how long it takes to reformat a big drive - I just let it run overnight. After a little more than a month I have stored about 140 GB of TV. If I don't manually manage the files then Media Center will simply discard the oldest files once the drive is almost full.
I also discovered that SecondLife doesn't want to work on my Vista install (yet) so that is another good reason to use dual boot for Windows XP.
